Inline Notes turns any Confluence page into a shared notepad. Sometimes a comment thread is too much, and editing the page is too permanent. Inline Notes offers a lightweight middle ground: quick, shared notes right where the work happens.
Usage
Inserting the macro
Open the Confluence page where you want to enable notes and start editing. Type /Inline Notes in the editor, or select the macro from the macro browser. Publish the page — from that moment on, everyone who can view the page can add notes.
Adding a note
Type your note in the input field and press Ctrl + Enter (Windows/Linux) or ⌘ + Enter (Mac) to save. Alternatively, use the submit button. New notes appear instantly at the top of the list.
Deleting a note
Your own notes can be removed at any time via the delete icon next to the note. Confluence administrators can delete any note to keep pages tidy.
Authorship & timestamps
Every note automatically shows the author's avatar, display name and timestamp. It's always clear who wrote what and when — no manual signing needed.
Permissions
Inline Notes follows the permissions of the Confluence page:
- Read notes: All users who can view the page.
- Add notes: All users who can view the page (active license required).
- Delete own notes: Any logged-in user for their own notes.
- Delete any note: Confluence administrators.
Privacy & security
Inline Notes is built on Atlassian Forge and follows a privacy-first design:
- Your data stays in your Atlassian cloud. Notes are stored within the Forge platform — nothing is sent to external servers.
- Minimal permissions. The app only needs storage for notes and read access to user profile information (for names and avatars).
- No tracking, no external dependencies.
Full details are available in the App privacy policy.
Licensing
Inline Notes is a paid app available through the Atlassian Marketplace. Reading notes is always available. An active license is required to add or delete notes. Pricing and license management are handled by Atlassian directly.
